Well, what I'm doing this year is "planning" what I will do over the holiday week. Usually, people have issues around the holiday because whatever routine they normally have gets messed up with days off work, family commitments, shopping and other time-consuming things. So, what you have to do is come up with a reasonable plan and stick with it.

For me, I rearranged my dates with my personal trainer, I'm taking a travel day as my day off of working out. I researched gyms local to where I will be over Christmas, and I will go there and pay a daily rate to strength train so I don't skip days. I have committed myself to at least 1 hour per day to work out (whether strength training at the gym, or cardio).

Sticking to that regimen will keep me from overeating, because fitness will be in my mind. I don't intend to skip Christmas dinner or avoid appetizers and snacks altogether, but I will just be mindful of it, and keep it to a minimum, moderate amount. You can enjoy food, without gorging on it.

Bear in mind the calorie contents of things. If you want to eat cookies, for example, look them up at calorieking.com and find out roughly how many calories they have.

For example a medium sized (2 1/4" diameter) chocolate chip cookie has about 50 calories. So, a reasonable amount of cookies is not "10" - a reasonable amount is "2." Then wait a while before you have something else.

Lots of people have cheese and crackers as snacks around the holidays. Remember, cheddar cheese has 113 calories per ounce. That's about a slice of cheese, or about 4 little squares to put on crackers. The crackers themselves have calories too - 5 Premium Saltines have 50 calories..... so if you eat 5 crackers and an ounce of cheese that's about 160-170 calories!

So your chocolate chip cookies and cheese and cracker snack already gets you up to between 250 and 300 calories! If you are eating breakfast, lunch and dinner, you can see how this can easily add up. If you are drinking alcohol or sugary sodas.... you can easily blow past 3,000 or 4,000 calories without even thinking about it.

So, it is important to MODERATE your snack and food intake, and try to do an hour of calorie burning exercise each day. If you just get up a little early, and blow out your exercise, you will feel great and your metabolism will burn some extra calories all day. And if you combine that with MODERATION, then you will likely not gain any weight.

Good luck. It takes discipline and motivation. I am hoping to succeed in this myself.... I know it's hard, though because I like my food....
References :
You might think about trying this book called "The Movie Star Diet" by Steve Simmons. It helped me lose thirty pounds in 2 1/2 months when I didn't think anything would work. My goal to begin with was only 20 lbs! It has a really easy plan to follow and an excellent workout as well.
References :
http://www.themoviestardiet.com

I'm on a diet too.
Well i suggest you drink LOTS of water, cut down on the soda and junk food, like pizza, chips, etc. If you want a snack, grab a piece of food fruit or veggies. Oh and exercise on a daily basis :]] hope this helps.
References :
Me.
